butterflies with a bigger purpose

Our business began with the butterfly shells, but along our journey they became so much more than just unique pieces of jewelry. We are so lucky to have become a part of something so much bigger. They represent strength, hope, and the stories of those who have been affected by Thyroid Cancer. Learn more about why this cause is so close to our hearts below! ♡

MEET ROSE!

I got to meet Rose over a year ago now at a farmers market. She came in and immediately was drawn to our butterfly shell pieces. She went on to tell me how the butterflies resonated with her because they are a symbol for Thyroid cancer, which her and her sister Lily were both in a battle with at the time. I was absolutely amazed by her and their story. This is how we became passionate about raising awareness for Thyroid cancer and what continues to inspire us! Check out more about Rose and Lily's stories below.

Rose's Story

My Story One Year Later

Hi, my name is Rose, and about a year ago I shared a little bit of my thyroid cancer journey with Sandy Souls. A lot has happened since then, so I wanted to share where I am today.

My journey actually started with my sister. She was diagnosed with thyroid cancer after something was discovered during a routine sports physical. I went to appointments with her and, as I listened to everything she had been experiencing, I started realizing that some of it sounded familiar.

I decided to get myself checked, but at first I didn’t feel like my concerns were being taken seriously. I knew my body and knew something wasn’t right, so I kept advocating for myself until I finally got the testing and biopsy I had been asking for.

A few days before my 21st birthday, I opened MyChart and saw the word I never expected to see: cancer.

Last year, I had my thyroid removed. Since then, I’ve had to adjust to life without it... daily medication, bloodwork, appointments, hormone changes, fatigue, and learning what my new normal looks like.

One of the biggest things this experience has taught me is to listen to your body.

Some things to look out for are a lump or swelling in your neck, pressure or fullness in your throat, trouble swallowing or breathing, persistent hoarseness or changes in your voice, swollen lymph nodes, neck or throat pain, and fatigue. Changes in energy, weight, heart rate, mood, or your menstrual cycle can also be signs that something may be going on with your thyroid.

These symptoms don’t automatically mean thyroid cancer, but if any of them sound familiar or something just doesn’t feel right, please go see a doctor and get checked.

Something I never knew before going through this is that 1 in 8 women will develop a thyroid disorder in her lifetime, and women are 5–8 times more likely than men to experience thyroid problems. Thyroid cancer is also diagnosed almost three times more often in women than men.

And now, a year after having my thyroid removed, I got the news I had been praying for:

There is no evidence of cancer or thyroid tissue left in my body.

There will still be checkups, bloodwork, medication, and that little bit of anxiety that comes with it all, but I am so grateful. Grateful that I listened to my body, grateful that I advocated for myself, grateful for the people who stood beside me, and especially grateful that I get another day.

I also want to say a huge thank you to Sandy Souls for continuing to use her platform to raise awareness for thyroid cancer. When we first met, she gave my sister and me butterfly necklaces because of the special meaning the butterfly has to the thyroid cancer community. A year later, that butterfly means even more to me.

Thank you, Sandy Souls, for caring about this cause, for sharing my story, and for helping more people learn what to look out for. You’re truly the best, and I’m so grateful our paths crossed.

If there’s one thing I hope you take from my story, it’s this:

Know your body. Listen when something doesn’t feel right. Ask questions. Advocate for yourself. And if you don’t feel heard, find someone who will listen.

If sharing my story helps even one person get checked, then it’s worth it.

MEET LILY!

Lily and her sister Rose have both faced their own battles with thyroid cancer, and their journey is a huge part of the story behind our butterfly pieces and why this cause has become so meaningful to us. I’ve been so inspired by Lily’s strength and her willingness to share her story to help bring awareness to thyroid cancer. I’m so grateful to be able to share a little bit of her story with you and hope that by doing so, we can help spread awareness and remind others that they are not alone. Lily's Story

I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at just 16 years old after a 3.5 cm goiter was discovered in my neck during a routine physical.

I had my first scans, followed by a biopsy in March 2023. When the biopsy came back inconclusive, I had my first surgery to get half of my thyroid removed in July 2023. In August, I had my second surgery to get the remainder after the results confirmed that it was follicular thyroid cancer.

I was going into my junior year of high school while trying to process everything that was happening. I had to balance school, work, appointments, surgeries, recovery, and everything that comes with being a teenager. It wasn't easy, and there were many days when I felt overwhelmed trying to keep up with everything while also dealing with my health.
Then came the low-iodine diet during my first couple weeks of my junior year, and around my 17th birthday, I had radioactive iodine treatment after cancer was still present. It was definitely not how I imagined spending such an important time in my life, but it became another part of my story.

Today, I’m cancer-free and continue to take daily medication and have yearly checkups and scans to make sure everything remains okay. Going through thyroid cancer at such a young age wasn't easy, but it taught me how strong I could be and how important it is to listen to your body.

If sharing my story can encourage even one person to get checked or pay attention to changes in their neck, then everything I went through is worth talking about.

I also want to thank Sandy Souls for bringing attention to something that is often referred to as a “good cancer.” There is no such thing as a good cancer. Thyroid cancer had a huge impact on my life, and my life will never be exactly the same because of it. That is why bringing awareness matters. So make sure to check your necks!
